PRODUCT: MILES WIDE STICKY FINGERS
A COMFORTABLE COCKPIT WITH OR WITHOUT GLOVES
On days when we ride without gloves, we would want our handlebar grips to feel comfortable and firm in our hands. And occasionally (when we wanna regulate speed), we would also note that the brake levels are either "too cold", "feels brittle" or simply uncomfortable to our glove-less fingers. Small matter you may think. Agree. But, should we come across a simple and affordable solution to this, why not?
STICKY FINGERS
These are actually full length rubber brake lever sleeves available in 7 cool colors (black, blue, clear, grey, neon green, pink and red). They are supposed to protect the entire lever and your body in a freak accident.
Improved for 2017, these newer versions are made with tacky (sticky fingers) compound and can be cut to fit any brake lever. They can also be cut to cover just the "tip" of your lever if you so wish to.
Priced to cost "less than an inner tube" They are suppose to be low-involvement products which you would causally pick up and add on to your bike. This little add-on would give your bike that next level of personalization, and while doing so, give you that extra cockpit comfort and protection. You do not want you brake lever to become that freak tool that may poke or scratch yourself, other riders or other bikes.
Miles Wide Industries summaries their Sticky Fingers as follows;
Some of Sticky Fingers' benefits include:
- Insulates the lever from extreme cold
- Makes the lever easy to reach and grab offering unique modulation
- Protects the lever from scratching other bikes and from damaging the lever itself
- Stays sticky in inclement weather
- They look rad
HOW IT WAS DONE BEFORE STICKY FINGERS
With Sticky Fingers, we are treated with a pair of soft tacky rubbers for the brake levers. Back when these products are not available, we made do with simple cable-housings which we would then heat up to wrap around the lever. Often, we would only wrap the tip of the lever so that it serve as a simple "guide" for fingers during riding and as a thin protection that would not scratch other bikes during stowing.
INSTALLING
(Determine the length your want the rubber stuff to be)
(Cut to size)
THROWING THE EXCESS RUBBERS OFF TOO WASTEFUL?
These rubbers are made from good compound. Why not use them for a cheap bike hack?
(Cut a slit along the unused rubber)
(Trim it further to the length you want)
(Looks alright as a 2-cable sleeve to prevent cable burn … We are still waiting to see if it would slide off or drop off during rides though …)
