NEWS: OCBC CYCLE 2014 WEEKEND!

OCBC CYCLE 2014 WEEKEND!

It's a weekend that's packed with road cycling news.

The sixth edition of OCBC Cycle Singapore finished with a flourish with more than 10,000 cyclists uniting to take part in the mass ride categories – The Super Challenge (59km), The Challenge (40km), The Business Times Charity Challenge (40km), The Foldies Community Ride (27km) and The Community Ride (27km) – on Sunday at the F1 Pit Building.

Acting Minister of Manpower Tan Chuan-Jin served as the Guest-of-Honour of the event and flagged off The Super Challenge, before cycling in the category himself. Among the cyclists participating on Sunday were representatives from the event’s four official charities: Dover Park Hospice, Singapore Children’s Society, SingHealth Transplant TRUEfund and SportCares, the philanthropic arm of the Singapore Sports Council.

In total, close to 12,000 cyclists took part over the three days at OCBC Cycle Singapore, the nation’s premier mass participation cycling event on closed public roads.

And on Saturday at the F1 Pit Building, more than 1,000 cyclists took part in The Ultimate Foldies Challenge and the kids and family rides.

The Ultimate Foldies Challenge is a unique ride category in which cyclists dashed from the start arch to a designated “Unfolding Zone”, where they unfolded their bicycles, pushed them through to a “Mounting Zone” and rode around the 2.6-kilometre route around the F1 Pit Building for 20 minutes for the heats and 30 minutes for the final. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three male and female finishers, and prizes were also awarded for the top three Best Dressed cyclists.

More than 900 participants took part in the kids and family rides: The Tricycle Ride, The Mighty Savers Kids Ride and The Junior Challenge.

Really an eventful weekend with cycling at one of the most scenic part of this city!

There were also numerous reports of incidents and injuries over the weekend. Bikezilla wants to remind all cyclists to remain alert at all times. Being in a mass cycle event may be fun but there lies dangers that are more likely to happen than in small group rides. Ride safe and enjoy every ride!
