Bike stand used to be a simple affair – you get a stand that fits the widest tyre width you would possibly go for, problem solved. Things are a little different now with more wheel sizes and tyre widths to choose from. Biggest culprits being fat bikes and plus bikes. With more advancement in bike technology and design, comes higher expectations from end-users. Bike stands are now expected to be light yet strong, versatile yet handsome (form PLUS function) and hopefully durable. They should also help improve riding skills!

While the Granite Design Hex Stand can't help you improve your riding skills, it pretty much fits most of the other criteria to be an extremely versatile, strong yet light weight bike stand! Here's the details.

 

GRANITE DESIGN

Granite Design is a young company and introduces themselves as a rider-owned setup. Their love for traveling to different places to race and ride sparked the design for Hex Stand – a compact an versatile bike stand that they can bring with them on bike trips.

 

 

 

FOR HOLLOW AXLE CRANKSET

Hex Stand is design for the bikes with hollow axle crankset. It is compatible with most mountain bike cranksets and Shimano road crankset with M20 adapter bolt. The Hex Stand comes in two different supporting axle sizes, 19mm and 10mm.

ADJUSTABLE AXLE HEIGHT

To cater to the different wheel sizes, the Hex Stand allows for sliding the axle sleeve along the stand's main beam.

OUR IMPRESSION SO FAR

The Hex stand has proven to be a very convenient and adaptable bike stand. We have been using it for nearly 2 months. Mounting the bike onto it is extremely easy. The bike is very stable once mounted on the stand. 

We were worried about the axle sleeve scratching our hollow crank initially but so far, it was all good. This is due to the stand's axle sleeve being made with a strong and smooth hard plastic material. As the plastic is not abrasive, it doesn't scratch the metal hollow crackset.

The Hex Stand also comes with a carrying bag and the a an adaptor for Shimano crankset. This bag makes it convenient to simply throw the folded stand into your bike bag should you want to have an off-site bike assemble/repair station with you at your next riding destination.

One feature that is worthy of mention is the way the Hex Stand folds up into a very small package. Compared with other folding bike stands commonly available in the market, they are definitely a winner in this area. Being foldable and compact didn't make it any less stronger than the rest of the stand.

The sliding sleeve is unlocked/locked via a quick release similar to the way a quick release seat clamp works. Be sure to tighten the Allen Bolt with just enough torque so that the sleeve clamps securely at locked position. You will need to tighten this at your first use. Do not forget to do this as a loosely secured sleeve would mean an unstable stand. You don't want to get a rude shock of your bike suddenly tipping over.

The Hex Stand is not the cheapest bike stand you would be able to find. Good form and function comes at a slight premium. Well worth it, in our opinion.

And did we mentioned that it looked really good too. Nice bikes deserve nice bike stands. With 6 cool colors to choose from, this stand would be a great complement to your beloved precious bike (Think color matching) even when its not used for traveling, serving as a permanent stand at home.
