PRODUCT: BIRZMAN TYRE PUMPS
BIKE TYRE PUMPS THAT WORKS WELL AND LOOKS GOOD
Whenever we talk about Birzman tools and bicycle pumps, one impression never fails to cross our minds – aesthetics. Yes. The brand makes beautiful and innovative stuff. And very often, we do get the impression that they are kind of under-rated in our local scene. We take a closer look at what many may have missed.
UNDER RATED IN SINGAPORE
Birzman was founded in 2007 to answer the need for well designed, bike-specific tools. Situated in the picturesque village of Dacun, the Birzman head quarter boasts a spacious 6200 square meter office building and warehouse, and a reminder that design and aesthetics is always part of this brand's product criteria. And it is in an such environment that Birzman went about designing and producing cycling-specific tools to the cycling world. In Birzman's eyes, there were just too many cast-offs from the auto trade or low quality, imperfect bike-specific tools. They want to instill confidence in every rider with their products. And we think that they are on the right track.
BICYCLE PUMPS
Birzman offer 9 models of bicycle floor pumps (suitable for road and mountain bikes, with 2 out of the 9 being MTB specific), 8 models of road hand pumps and 4 models of MTB-specifc hand pumps. In addition, they also offer 9 different models of CO2 cannisters and 3 models of shock pumps! A wide enough range?
MTB-SPECIFIC PUMPS
Many of us do not really go for MTB-specific bicycle pumps. The main difference between road and MTB-specific pumps is the air volume and air pressure. MTB pumps are usually high volume with low pressure ceilings. This ensures the bigger tyres are filled up with fewer pumps as compared to a road pump. And since most MTB riding conditions rarely need to go beyond 30psi for trail and 50psi for street or 60psi for park MTBs and even BMXes, there is really no need for high pressure, low volume pumps.
SOME COOL TECHNOLOGIES
Cyclists are as much jargon junkies as customers of any other stuff. Products with cool techno-jargons are usually given more attention. And Birzman has no lack of patented as well as simply cool tech bits. We highlight some here.
AIR LOCK
The air-lock valve adaptor screws onto the threaded Schrader valve on the shock pump in one easy step and follows the same easy one-step to disconnect. This design prevent air lost when disconnecting the valve from the shock.
SNAP-IT APOGEE
This is one of Birzman's pride and it's patented in USA, China, Taiwan, Germany and United Kingdom. The Snap-it Apogee is actually a sliding collar that allows the pump to switch between Presta and Schrader head with just a slide from top to bottom or vice versa. This means no adaptor needed. In addition, the Air Lock system on the apogee comes equipped with air-lock to ensure no blow-offs at high pressure.
CAD SYSTEM
The Controlled Air Discharge (CAD) system is an air pressure release valve that works much like the air release system on shock pumps. Birzman got them on their floor pumps.
5 DEGREE BARREL ANGLE
Birzman floor pumps are designed with a 5 degree tilt towards the user for better ergonomics. The barrel of the pump is also designed for stability and strength. Nice value-added touch!
QR HOSE
Birzman hand pumps are fitted with Quick Release (QR) Hoses that are tucked into the pump and easily extend out when needed. To activate the QR, simply pump once.
ACTIVATE VALVE FUNCTION
Air cannisters from Birzman are manufactured with Activate Valve Function. This means the CO2 would only be release when the head of the inflator is pressed down. This translate to a more accurate and controlled inflation. And in situations when you only have one cannister and wish to ensure that it fills up the tyre without wastage on the road or at the trail, this would be an invaluable feature.
TURN PIERCE FUNCTION
Another convenience feature for CO2 cannister users is the Turn Pierce Function when using with Birzman adaptors. Activating the CO2 cannister is simply a turn of the valve instead of the usual popping of the CO2 cannister.
FORM AND FUNCTION
We like that Birzman makes beautiful tools. They are truly a case when we get the best of products with both good form and function. And since we will be needing bike tools, pumps and other stuff, as long as we are still pursuing our biking passion – why not go for the nice ones? (They make good conversation topic at the same time too.)
